Two new goalies for Jesenice HK Acroni Jesenice has agreed terms with two Goalies fort he upcoming season in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. Jaakko Suomalainen (FIN) and Mitch O'Keefe (CAN) will guard the Crease in the Red Steel City. HK Acroni Jesenice had secured the services of 19 players, seven Defencemen and twelve forwards already. Now the Goalkeepers have been agreed on, too. A Finn and a Canadian will battle for the starter’s spot in front of the net. 31 years old Jaakko Suomalainen is up against his adversary, five years younger, from Almonte, ON, Canada: Mitch O'Keefe! Finnish Champion Jaakko Suomalainen has not left Finland – at least, not to play professional Ice-Hockey. He won the second Division in Finland two seasons ago with Vaasan Sport, where he spent last season, too. In 2006/07, left-catching Suomalainen even won the SM-Liiga with Kärpät Oulo. He’s a winner, a player that has won trophies already and surely every coach likes experience and determination on his roster. His Save Percentages were will beyond .900 in the last years, with totals of .927 and .911 in the last two with Vaasan Sport. Suomalainen is expected in Jesenice on Sunday. Canadian Contingent rising Ontario-born Mitch O'Keefe is the second import-goalie for the Red Steelers. He first appeared on the hockey scouts radar with Ferris State University in NCAA. Then the left-catching giant in goal (he stands tall at 6’ 2’’) moved on to ECHL. He wouldn’t stay long, the AHL came calling. Binghamton senators picked up O’Keefe, and gave him six games to shine, in which he totalled a 94.3 Save Percentage, but was still sent back to the Elmira Jackals. It seems he’s seen enough Minor League Action in America now. He surely won’t be satisfied with coming to Jesenice as back-up and will give Suomalainen a good run for the starting berth. He won the race of: „who’ll arrive with the new team first”, as he’ll be in on Thursday already, to start training with the team. |

KHL Medvescak Zagreb have extended versatile Christopher Powers’ contract and will start training on-ice on Monday. Team is also affected by a re-scheduling. The Bears have all arrived in the city of Zagreb, meaning KHL Medvescak Zagreb is ready to make headlines again in Croatia’s Capital. Headcoach Ted Sator has arrived on Wednesday, the last of the imports exited Zracna Lukas gates on Friday. They’ll have the weekend to shake off jet-lag and are expected to be in top-notch form for the first practice-session on ice, which will be executed on Monday. They’ve only got six days to find their game speed and the proper lines, because EC VSV will be the first opposition next Sunday in a pre-season friendly. Joining the team on another one-year-contract after some speculation is 24-years-old Chris Powers. A Big teamplayer form Lynnfield, Massachusetts, he has featured in 63 games last season, playing a steady game without scoring a lot (one goal, one assist) but proved his worth to the team. He had arrived from Trinity College before last season. Game Re-Scheduling KHL Medvescak Zagreb are also involved in a re-scheduling in November. Moser Medical Graz 99ers’ Arena is not available at Friday, Novembver 19th. Therefore their game with KHL Medvescak Zagreb will be rescheduled to Tuesday, November 23rd with the Bully at 19:15, the federation confirmed. |

VSV beat Medvescak 6:3 In a pacy game, EC VSV beat KHL Medvescak Zagreb 6:3 in front of a 3.000 crowd at Villacher Stadthalle in a first inter-Erste Bank Eishockey Liga pre-season Friendly. The first pre-season game between Erste Bank Eishockey Liga Teams brought KHL Medvescak Zagreb to Villachs Stadthalle. EC VSV had about 3.000 supporters backing them, and they did well in front of their crowd. Michaal Raffl and Andreas Wiedergut missed out on good chances but after three minutes, Matt Ryan scored after being left in acres of space. Medvescak found their feet, especially thanks to their top-line, comprised of T. J. Guidarelli, Aaron Fox and Frank Banham. Guidarelli scored the equalizer after a brilliant set-up by his old college-buddy. In a two-men-advantage, a deflected shot by Defender Mario Altmann found his way past Robert Kristan for the 2:1 and Roland Kaspitz knocked one in with his foot for the 3:1. After the interval, Matt Ryan set up another goal for Nik Petrik, who beat Kristan at the near post. After a check on Saso Rajsar, who had to be taken off, Raffl got a 2+10 Penalty. As arranged beforehand, Gasper Kroselj replaced Kristan at half-time, and only a little later, Joel Prpic collected a pass by Ryan Kinasewich and beat Gert Prohaska with ease. Nico Toff and Thomas Raffl, who had just returned back to the ice, scored two more for Villach, and put the game out of reach for the Bears. The third period left only one goal, executed like in his absolute hay-day by Aaron Fox with the shot ending up in the Top corner of the net with 43 minutes played. That was all, though as both teams had to pay tribute to the pace they had gone before. Pre-Season-Friendly 15.08.2010: EC VSV – KHL Medvescak Zagreb 6:3 (3:1, 3:1, 0:1) Goals Villach: Ryan (4./pp), Altmann (12./pp2), Kaspitz (17./pp), Toff (39.), Raffl (40.). 6:1 Big win for Bears 2. Oktober | 00:30 The Rabbit feels well in the Bear suit! Two goals for Wacey Rabbit in the 6:1-routing of Vienna. 2010-10-02 00:30:36 Big win for Bears KHL Medvescak Zagreb beat EV Vienna Capitals with 6:1 when shots were distributed 46:24 – for the visitors, which tells you something about Robert Kristans Performance in goal! HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana wasn’t so lucky and lost 4:6 in Graz. Both KHL Medvescak Zagreb and EV Vienna Capitals were quite short for players, but the Bears could bank on in-from Ryan Kinasewich. The Alberta-born „Cro-Nuck“ was involved in five of the six goals Zagreb scored. He scored the first, set up by a perfectly-timed pass by Andy Sertich. The Caps would soon find an equalizer, though: Dan Björnlies Blue-Line-rocket whizzed way of target but bounced back right in front of Francois Fortier, who made no mistake and scored easily. The Bears, chanted on by their faithful in dom sportova continued efficiently, though. Wacey Rabbit, Medvescaks’ new native Canadian – please refrain from calling him an Indian – scored from short distance to give his team the lead back after T. J. Guidarellis pass. On the powerplay, just before the period drew to a close, Joel Prpic deflected the puck past Adam Hauser. In the second, no goals were recorded. The reason for that hails form Slovenia and had a fine day in the Medvescak crease. Robert Kristan stopped all the 23 shots he faced in the period. In the thrid, the Bears made their visitors pay for this lack of conversion and tallied themselves. Inspired by the roar in the crowd, John Hecimovic scored twice and Wacey Rabbit doubled his tally, too, with all the goals coming on the powerplay. Capitals-Coach Kevin Gaudet was stunned: „I’ve never seen something like this before, We had so many chances, couldn’t score and they were punishing us with each attack they had.”, while Medvescaks Headcoach Ted Staor praised his goalie. Both teams have more injury concerns after the game. Don Maclean was out of the game after the second period and will miss the game with Jesenice while Peter Casparssons injury is undisclosed. Olimpija pays for weak opening minutes 6:26 were played in the Grazer Bunker and Ales Sila had seen enough of the day already. He chucked his mask and went off, leaving the crease for Matija Pintaric. And who could blame him? 3:0 after 6 and a half minutes, two powerplay goals (Darcy Werenka, Markus Peintner) and a shorthander by Stefan Herzog can take it out of you. Things didn’t look up for Pintaric, though. At the next Powerplay, Herzog was at it again, scoring his second of the night. In the intermission for the second period, the Slovenians had rallied and did better. John Hughes and Bostjan Golicic had closed in to 4:2, but right into the building momentum, Jean-Philippe Parè scored the fifth goal for the home team, that had some trouble scoring until tonight. with seven minutes played in the last period, Darcy Werenka nailed the coffin shut and sent Graz’ spectators happy. Two goals scored by Tomi Mustonen and Ziga Pance lifted the Dragons hopes but they didn’t manage to turn the game around. October 1st, 2010: KHL Medvescak Zagreb – EV Vienna Capitals 6:1 (3:1, 0:0, 3:0). Goals Zagreb: 1:0 Kinasewich (9.), 2:1, 6:1 Rabbit (16., 53./pp), 3:1 Prpic (19./pp), 4:1, 5:1 Hecimovic (44./pp, 49./pp). Goal Wien: 1:1 Fortier (15.). Moser Medical Graz99ers – HDD TILIA Olimpija Ljubljana 6:4 (4:0, 1:2, 1:2). Goals Graz: Werenka (2./pp, 48./pp), Herzog (5./sh, 18./pp), Peintner (7./pp), Pare (35.). Загреб — Лінц 9:0 Ерсте Банк працює і продовжує спонсорувати цілу Ерсте Банк Гокейну Лігу http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R534blMS83E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqZ4Z4dD8j4 KHL Medvescak Zagreb ripped apart EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz and claimed a record 9:0 victory with John Hecimovic scoring seven points in the process. SAPA Fehervar AV 19 took leaders EC-KAC to the Overtime but could only salvage one point from that game. Apart from Croatias’ Independence Day October 8th, is now worth another mention in the history books of the country. Never before has a team from Croatia won a game by such a margin in Erste Bank Eishockey Liga. The 9:0 tied KAC vs. Graz in 2003/2004 and Innsbruck beating Salzburg (2006/2007), which where the other 9:0-results in the history of the league. Badly hit by injuries and suspensions, Linz had come to town without key players Brad Purdie, Pat Leahy, Robert Lukas, MVP Alex Westlund, Martin Grabher-Meier and Rich Bronilla and looked like second best from the beginning. Kenny MacAulay opened the scoring before John Hecimovic scored his first. Ryan Kinasewich added another and Joel Prpic decided the game with his shorthander in the last minute. In the middle period, the Bears wreaked havoc among the tortured Linz Defence and scored at will. Wacey Rabbit, Frank Banham and Hecimovic, who added a hattrick to the delight of the crowd showed no mercy with Linz. Even when young Lorenz Hirn had been chase from the crease and replaced by his even younger backup Chris Lindenhofer, they continued to fire shot after shot. Hirn returned for the third period in which the Bears hunger for more goals had been satisfied and ended up with a period clean sheet. Star of the game Hecimovic commented right after the Sixty minutes: „«I can’t remember when I had a seven-point-game, it was just a perfect night» said John Hecimovic after the game and added: «We will celebrate a bit, but on Sunday we have a tough away trip to the Capitals in Vienna.» SAPA happy with point from leaders What a crazy game in Szekesfehervar! The home side quickly equalized Mike Craigs Powerplay goal courtesy of Krisztian Palkovics’ solo effort. At the time, Arpad Mihaly had already been sent to the showers for checking to the head and neck area with a match penalty, meaning he’s certainly unavailable for Sunday’s game. Then, the Red Jackets stormed ahead with Jeff Shantz, Markus Pirmann, and Greg Hager each scoring inside of 13 minutes. No way that the Hungarian Champions would mind. Instead, they knuckled down and chased the three-goal Lead. They found their chances when KAC had two players in the sin bin and Balazs Ladanyi made them pay both times. Between those two goals Andy Chiodo pulled off an absolute stunner of a save from Palkovics, Now, the game didn’t look so done and dusted anymore and it was Marton Vas who scored the equalizer two minutes from the end of the period. In the third, Dieter Kalt used a dreadful change by the home team to fire his team ahead again. And again, Klagenfurt felt too sure about their one-goal lead. Palkovics was left on to much space, circling around in Wayne Gretzky’s office, and set up New boy Juraj Durco who score the equalizer yet again. The match went to overtime and now, with the first goal scored deciding, it was only logic that the team that was never behind all game long would win: David Schuller scored the winner on another rebound goal. Inter-Austrian-Duel EV Vienna Capitals beat EC Red Bull Salzburg 7:1, confirming that the reigning champions have issues. They lost their last three games and had had their spirits up already when Ryan Duncan tallied in the powerplay. But as we’ve heard often times before, “You don’t win matches in the sin bin” and that was were Salzburgs players sat way to often and the goals came rushing in. Often fired form the blue line, the puck found it’s way into the net of Reinhard Divis and Thomas Hoeneckl respectively. The goalies had little support form their front men, and four of the secven goals coming in special team situations tells us a lot about the game itself. Friday, October 08th, 2010: KHL Medvescak Zagreb – EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz 9:0 (4:0, 5:0, 0:0). Goals Zagreb: 1:0 MacAuley (8./PP) 2:0, 7:0, 8:0, 9:0 Hecimovic (9., 27., 31., 36./PP2), 3:0 Kinasewich (12.), 4:0 Prpic (16./SH), 5:0 Rabbit (23.), 6:0 Banham (26.) Goals Linz: none. Friday, October 15th, 2010: KHL Medvescak Zagreb – EC-KAC 3:4 SO (1:0, 1:0, 1:3, 0:1, 0:0). Goals Zagreb: 1:0 Jakopic (11.), 2:0 Prpic (34.), 3:1 Hecimovic (52.) Goals Klagenfurt: 2:1 Hager (45.), 3:2 Shantz (54./PP), 3:3 Craig (60.), 3:4 Hager (65./dec. Penalty) Sold out Dom Sportova was celebrating for the best part of sixty minutes until EC-KAC managed to tie the game with KHL Medvescak Zagreb at 3:3 and finally win it on Penalties. In the mean time, SAPA Fehervar AV19 lost their home game to EHC LIWEST Black Wings Linz and slipped back to tenth place. For ten minutes, both teams checked each other out at Dom Sportova (and i’d like you to read the „checked“ part as highlighted: Nice, hard hockey was played) to the joy of 7500 Croatians and 50 travelling Klagenfurteans. But then, T.J. Guidarellis cross pass eluded backchecking Tyler Spurgeon and found Rok Jakopic who scored his second of the season. His first had come against EC-KAC in their first contest. KHL Medvescak Zagreb, who sport the best powerplay statistic in the whole of Erste Bank Eishockey Liga failed to convert in man advantage even though they were the better team in the first period. Midway through the second, Joel Prpic pounced on an error by the Red Jacekts’ Sean Brown, skated towards Andy Chiodo and beat the Goalie with all his routine. Rob Kristan seemed on te hway to his next clean sheet at this point, saving goal-bound efforts by Dieter Kalt and Mike Craig in style. KAC aren’t at the top for nothing, though as they heaped pressure on their opposition right form out of the starting blocks in the third period. And after clever work by Kalt, Greg Hager tallied. The game started to heat up and the refs looked like they’d lose the plot. The Players focused — wisely – on playing hockey and when Marko Lovrencic sent Prpic down the boards, the towering center cruised behind goal and looked for a passing chance. He didn’t find a way, tired the wrap around and via Chiodos pad, the puck found it’s way to John Hecimovic, who scored. Jeff Shantz closed the gap again much to the dismay of the Croats who felt their goalie had been interfered with. The Red jackets pulled theirs to equalize and a lucky bounce gave them the 3:3. Zagreb continued to feel hard done by and finally lost in the shootout. |
