Congratulations to GM Garth Snow for capturing my Gem (Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous) Signing of the Summer award. It's not often a guy who scored 12 goals last season —- and has only broken the 20-goal barrier once in his six-year NHL career —- gets nearly $3 million for his efforts, but that's the gift Fedotenko has received from the Isles.
Ted Nolan is famous for squeezing out as much as possible from his players, but what do the Isles honestly believe the high-water mark for Fedotenko can be at this point? More to the point —- why on earth doesn't an incentive-laden deal make more sense for this guy than guaranteeing him a payday regardless of his efforts?

Newsday: Last year, Tambellini was one of the spare forwards trying to make an impression. This camp, he's playing left wing on the second line with center Josef Vasicek and right wing Miro Satan. Matched against the top line of Mike Comrie, Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko in Sunday's scrimmage, the second line produced three goals, two by Tambellini and one by Satan, in a 4-3 win in regulation time.

Newsday.com: Four days after the NHL free-agent market opened, the names actually penciled in at the top of Snow's roster board were those of right wing Bill Guerin and center Mike Comrie. Signing a 36-year-old goal-scorer and an undersized center joining his fifth NHL team raised as many questions as it answered. There was no shortage of skeptics ready to suggest that the Islanders' top unit, which also includes left wing Ruslan Fedotenko, should be christened the "Leftover Line.»

Newsday.com: It looks as if the events of July 1 might not matter as much as what happened Oct. 5 at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. Last season ended here with a first-round playoff loss to the Sabres, but the Islanders returned Friday night with more firepower to open the 2007-08 season with a 6-4 victory, led by three goals from a brand new top line.
When the free-agent market opened July 1, the Isles lost Ryan Smyth, Jason Blake, Viktor Kozlov and Tom Poti to start an exodus that eliminated nine players from the playoff lineup. Within days, general manager Garth Snow put together a new first line of center Mike Comrie and wingers Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko, and they made a spectacular debut against the Sabres.
Comrie had two goals, including a great individual effort on the game-winner, and two assists; Fedotenko added one of three Islanders power-play goals in four opportunities plus two assists, and Guerin had three assists. That performance should have Islanders fans fired up for a rematch with the Sabres in the home opener Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum.

First, Fedotenko potted a rebound on the five-on-three, then Chris Campoli swooped in to score from midslot on a five-on-four for a 3-2 lead at 16:42. But a failed clearing attempt by new defenseman Andy Sutton went to Stafford, who drove to the net to tie the game at 3 at 18:19.
The Comrie line stepped up in the second period. On one hard-working shift, Comrie set up shots by Guerin and Fedotenko that Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller stopped. After a faceoff, Comrie took a cross-ice pass from Fedotenko and hit the open side of the net for a 4-3 lead at 7:35.

The Sports Network: Mike Comrie scored twice in the third period to lift the New York Islanders over the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, in the back end of a season-opening home-and-home series at Nassau Coliseum.
Chris Campoli also scored for the Islanders, who beat the Sabres 6-4 on Friday and are off to a strong start to the 2007-08 season, mostly due to the play of Comrie and linemates Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko. Rick DiPietro made 30 saves in the victory.

Under seven minutes later, Comrie lit the lamp again. He streaked down the slot unchecked and easily one-timed home a pass from Fedotenko, who was stationed near the goal line to the left of the net. Comrie's fourth goal of the season with 11:31 remaining in regulation gave New York a comfortable two- goal edge.
«We wanted to come in and establish a work ethic as a team," Comrie said about the team's 2-0 start to the season. «The first two games we�ve done that. It�s a lot more fun when you win.»

Newsday.com: For the third time in the past four games, the Islanders' top line of Mike Comrie, Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko failed to score a goal, and with only 28 seconds of power-play time, the Isles' offense was dormant for two periods against the Flyers last night at Wachovia Center.

Although the Islanders got in those licks, they seldom threatened Biron seriously through the first two periods. Trent Hunter threw the puck away on a three-on-one rush early, and Fedotenko failed to get a shot off on a three-on-one shorthanded rush in the second period.

Guerin was moved from the hot-gone-cold forward line with Mike Comrie and Ruslan Fedotenko to work alongside center Mike Sillinger, in what Nolan called a «subtle change» similar to the recent joining of Sean Bergenheim with Miroslav Satan and Josef Vasicek.

Newsday.com: n the first minute of the third period, the Islanders appeared to take a 3-0 lead when the puck deflected off Washington goaltender Olaf Kolzig, hit Islander Ruslan Fedotenko in the shoulder and face and went in. The referees ruled Fedotenko directed it, and replay officials upheld the call.
