Newsday: Flu season is in full bloom, and it has hit the Islanders hard.
Five Islanders —- Rick DiPietro, Mike Sillinger, Bryan Berard, Andy Sutton and Ruslan Fedotenko —- missed Wednesday morning's practice at the Coliseum and are questionable for Thursday night's home game against the Kings. Assistant coach Gerard Gallant also missed practice with the illness. Fedotenko and Sutton sat out Tuesday night's 5-2 loss to Ottawa.
«It's just one of those things that once it gets going, it's tough to stop," Guerin said. «Hopefully, you're one of the guys that doesn't get it.»
Hope, Hunter, said is about as much as players can do.
«It's something that's out of your control," Hunter said. «You either get it or you don't. [Fedotenko] was at pregame skate Wednesday and looked fine and then, boom, he got it. It sounds pretty nasty.»

Associated Press: Malone gave the Penguins a 2-1 lead early in the second period when he deflected a Whitney shot from the point out of mid-air and between the pads of DiPietro. Malkin, who won only five of 21 faceoffs three nights earlier in a loss at New Jersey, won a faceoff cleanly to begin the play.
But the Islanders, who scored again 4 minutes later when Ruslan Fedotenko beat Conklin glove side while standing in the right slot and taking a feed from Trent Hunter while on the power play for his ninth of the season.

Newsday: As the cherry on top, it marked the Isles' first win over the division rival Flyers in four attempts this season. Their desperation produced a season-high 47 shots. Jeff Tambellini got his first goal, but no one was more desperate than the checking line of Trent Hunter, Ruslan Fedotenko and Josef Vasicek.
Hunter opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season and had the primary assist on a goal by Sean Bergenheim for a 3-1 lead and what turned out to be the game-winner by Fedotenko for a 4-2 margin at 14:02 of the third period.
Fedotenko drew a roughing penalty with 1:06 left to play because he took exception to Philly's Mike Richards lying on top of Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro in a scrum.

Hunter, Fedotenko and Vasicek have struggled offensively much of the season, but coach Ted Nolan encouraged his team to throw more pucks at the net. With their big bodies, that trio crashed the crease and created havoc all night as they combined for 13 shots on goal. Hunter got to the rebound of a Fedotenko shot and kept poking the puck in the crease until it went in for the first goal, and then, his pass ahead created a breakaway that Bergenheim converted for a 3-1 lead at 13:41 of the second period.
Scott Hartnell's goal at 17:30 of the second off a terrific pass across from R.J. Umberger made it a one-goal game, but Fedotenko created some breathing room with his third period goal, netting the rebound of a shot from the left side by Hunter. It was Fedotenko's second goal in as many games since having a talk with Nolan three games ago.
«He just wanted me to find my game and go more to the front of the net, create some traffic and bring the puck to the net," Fedotenko said. «I've been trying to find the perfect play on the outside and hold the puck and go in the corners, but you can't score goals from the corners. I just tried to bring my body to the front of the net, and hopefully, good things would happen like on the first goal.»

Canadian Press: Fedotenko continued his torrid scoring pace when he made it 2-0 for New York 90 seconds into the period. He skated around the net and tried a backhand wraparound. Lehtonen made the initial stop, but Fedotenko swept the rebound home.
«I feel our line's playing better," Fedotenko said of Trent Hunter and Josef Vasicek. «Everything's working right now.»
Fedotenko now has goals in three straight games, and five goals in his last five. He, Hunter and Vasicek have combined for 11 points in the last three games.
