EC Red Bull Salzburg have beaten EC-KAC 3:2 in the Overtime and won the Championship. Of all people, Klagenfurt-born and raised Thomas Koch scored the winner, after he had a controversial goal disallowed three minutes from the end of the third period.
EC-KAC or EC Red Bull Salzburg, All or nothing, decision time in Klagenfurt! And the home side got the first two powerplays, but couldn’t produce dangerous situations from them as visiting Holders EC Red Bull Salzburg held on to the Blue line. Both teams tried to limit errors as best as possible, but it was evident that sooner or later, someone had to draw first blood. When Kirk Furey was sent to the sin bin, Marco Pewal got the puck in the slot and fired a shot in. Andy Chiodo reacted quickly, but couldn’t hold on to the puck, which bounced past Martin Schumnig and into the path of Matt Trattnig, who scored the go-ahead-goal. Five minutes of shock ensued, but then KAC found their feet and got the equalizer. On the man-advantage, the puck was sent towards the net by Furey, where it met the skates of Mike Craig and Shaun Heshka and trickled past a helpless Thomas Hoeneckl. The game was at its’ best now, but both goalies held their ground against Dave Schuller, Greg Hager, Stefan Geier and Brent Aubin respectively.
The second period was thrilling, but lacked goals. Steven Regier — Powerplay, Ramzi Abid, Kirk Furey — post, Doug Lynch in man-advantage, Martin St.Pierre made mistakes when presented with chances. The best opportunities were wasted when Thomas Hundertpfund muscled the Puck of Matt Trattnig and set up Joe Reichel and on the other side when Martin St.Pierre profited from a bad change but was denied by Chiodo.
In the third period, the game picked up pace again. Salzburg started with a lot of energy, but Andy Chiodo held on, even when he was hit right in the mask and got a bleeding cut at his nose. In the 52nd minute, Ramzi Abid and Mike Siklenka were involved in a small tussle, and all of a sudden, Steven Regier escaped with the puck behind the net, and scored with a long wrap-shot. KAC immediately chased the goal and got a powerplay, from which they scored five minutes from time to equalize. Thomas Koch and Manuel Latusa both wasted two chances and then, Salzburg got a powerplay. Koch scored from Abid’s pass, but the refs would have none of it and ruled the goal out for crease offside. Seconds from time, Marco Pewal was sent to the sin bin and the game went to overtime.
In the overtime, Salzburg weathered the 4-on-3-storm and got the game winner courtesy of Koch, who beat Chiodo from short distance by deflecting Ryan Duncan’s shot.
