Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Gonchar took part in the optional morning skate in a red jersey as he continues to practice without contact.
Therrien said winger Ruslan Fedotenko «should be back pretty soon, too.» Fedotenko broke his right hand punching former Penguins winger Colby Armstrong in the face Jan. 6 during a 3-1 win against Atlanta. He presumably is on or ahead of the original schedule of missing four to six weeks.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Winger Ruslan Fedotenko, out since Jan. 6 with a broken right hand, doesn't have a projected return date, either. He went through the full workout (wearing a red, no-contact jersey) yesterday, but handles and shoots the puck in a manner that suggests he hasn't regained enough strength in his hand to be effective in games.
«It's healing really, really well," Therrien said. «But that's not a guy who's really, really close.»
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: It will be determined after the morning skate whether defenseman Sergei Gonchar and/or winger Ruslan Fedotenko will play against Toronto.
Gonchar, out all season after left shoulder surgery, has been cleared medically, but he continues to consider himself day to day.
He did not go out early yesterday to work with conditioning coach Mike Kadar as he has been doing, but he manned the right point with the top unit when select members of the team spent about 15 minutes working on the power play before the main part of practice. Fedotenko, out the past 15 games because of a broken right hand, feels ready. «It's up to the coaches, but I think if [this] morning is good to go, I'll be in the lineup," he said.
Therrien said he intends to reunite Fedotenko with center Evgeni Malkin and right winger Petr Sykora on a line as soon as Fedotenko is up to full speed. Fedotenko had six goals, 12 points and a plus-minus rating of plus-7 in the 14 games before he got hurt on his first shift Jan. 6 against Atlanta when he punched former Penguins winger Colby Armstrong.
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Welcome back, part II
Forward Ruslan Fedotenko also returned to the lineup last night. Fedotenko missed 15 games since Jan. 6 when he broke his right hand while fighting Atlanta's Colby Armstrong. Fedotenko skated with the fourth line.
«He's good to go," Therrien said after the morning skate yesterday. «He'll play on the fourth line and see how he is. We liked the way he was playing before he got hurt.
«He got off to a slow start this year with us. But the last month before he got hurt, he was a player we were looking for.»
Fedotenko scored three goals in seven games before he was injured. He has 11 goals and 10 assists this season.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins Notebook: Fedotenko focused on his troubles, not Islanders'
By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
UNIONDALE, N.Y. —- Ruslan Fedotenko spent only one winter on Long Island and pulled on a New York Islanders sweater just 67 times, so it's not as if his roots run deep in this part of the world.
Even so, Fedotenko made some good friends during his time in New York, and stays in touch with former teammates such as Sean Bergenheim and Bruno Gervais.
Still, Fedotenko hasn't paid much attention lately to how his old team has fared. Not so much because he isn't interested, but because he has more pressing concerns as he prepares for the Penguins' game against the Islanders today at Nassau Coliseum.
Like how his current club is trying to scramble back into a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
«We have our problems," he said, «so I haven't really followed [the Islanders] too much.» Fedotenko missed 15 games because of a broken right hand before returning for the Penguins' 6-2 loss Saturday in Toronto.
He spent much of that game on a line with Sidney Crosby and Tyler Kennedy —- filling a spot usually taken by Pascal Dupuis —- and was there again yesterday, when the Penguins worked out at the Islanders' practice facility in nearby Syosset.
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: «Before Ruslan went down with his injury, he was really starting to come around," Bylsma said. «He's a big winger that can play a puck possession game in the offensive zone, and that's the role he's now.
«As for Miro — I was an assistant coach with the (2005-06 New York) Islanders and he was there, and it was a difficult year for us with a coaching change as well. Miro was a guy that played and battled ... and he was one of the guys that worked, battled and played.
«That's what I saw from him on Long Island. He's a guy that when he goes into traffic areas, goes into that slot area in front of the net, he's got a knack and a touch. He's got to do more of that, but he's got to be given a chance to do that as well.»
A chance is all either Satan or Fedotenko wanted.
«That's all any player wants," Fedotenko said. «But what any player wants is to get that Cup. That's why we're here. We thought this team could win the Cup, and we could help.
«We still can.»
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Crosby pulled the Penguins even 21 seconds into the second period, taking a drop pass from Ruslan Fedotenko and beating Biron high on the glove side for his 22nd of the season.
... Fedotenko, a former Flyer, made it 3-1 by beating Biron from near the top of the right circle at 12:09. The goal, Fedotenko's 12th, was set up by a cross-ice feed from Dupuis, who appeared to cross the Philadelphia blue line before the puck, but was not ruled offsides.
...
The Penguins maintained their composure, though, and Fedotenko put them back in front when he scored from below the left hash at 9:50 after taking a backhand pass from Crosby.
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: «I felt like we didn't sit back," Fedotenko said. «We can score and score another goal. We just don't sit back and don't really feel kind of emotionally drained. We're just like 'It's not a big deal, we'll score another one.' We have a good spirit and we believe in each other and I think that shows.»
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: LWs Matt Cooke and Ruslan Fedotenko did not practice yesterday, and their status to play at home against the Islanders is uncertain.
«It's that time of the year where some guys need a day off and to be evaluated," Bylsma said. «We may see them on the ice today, and we may not. I don't know, to be honest.»
The Sports Network: After neither team could solve the opposing netminder for nearly 57-plus minutes, Pittsburgh's Sergei Gonchar gathered a loose puck at the right circle and fired into a goal-mouth littered with bodies. Ruslan Fedotenko ran interference on a defender and the puck dropped down at the left side of the net, where Sykora swatted it into an open net.
«An unlucky bounce," said Danis. «You kind of knew that was the goal that was going to determine the game. It's unfortunate.»
CBSSports: Satan's goal, four seconds after a Penguins' power-play expired, gave Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead with 1:36 left in the second. Satan converted a rebound of Ruslan Fedotenko's shot following a turnover by Versteeg.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins center Jordan Staal gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 4:08 of the first period.
He was at the end of a shift when he collaborated with winger Ruslan Fedotenko to take the puck away from Stars leading scorer Mike Ribeiro along the boards outside the Dallas blue line.
Staal sent a cross-ice pass to center Evgeni Malkin, then scored off the rebound of Malkin's far-side shot.
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Winger Miroslav Satan has been placed on waivers today by the Penguins. He has 24 hours to clear. If he does not, the Penguins are free to send him to the AHL, where is salary would not count against the NHL's $56.7 million.
However, Satan has spent much of the past several games skating on a fourth line — not the role he was expected to fill when acquired, along with winger Ruslan Fedotenko, to help off-set the offseason losses of forwards Marian Hossa and Ryan Malone.
TSN: Ruslan Fedotenko, LW, Pittsburgh — A decent winger with good size and scoring touch, but has never scored more than 41 points in a season and is unlikely to this year despite spending time with both Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: No rematch
Thrashers winger Colby Armstrong has set his personal-best for goals in a season with 17, after scoring in Atlanta's 5-1 victory against the Capitals.
That equaled the output he had in 47 games with the Penguins in 2005-06, when he spent considerable time on Crosby's wing.
«He's had a great year," Crosby said.
«He's played really well, and I'm happy to see him doing well there.»
One of the low points of Armstrong's season came when Atlanta played Jan. 6 at Mellon Arena, as Armstrong had his pride bruised when Penguins winger Ruslan Fedotenko dropped him with a single punch.
Of course, Fedotenko actually got the worst of the fight, since the punch that felled Armstrong broke Fedotenko's hand.
«I don't know if there's going to be a rematch," Crosby said, laughing.
«If you ask [Fedotenko], I think he'll tell you that it wasn't worth the month out [of the lineup].»
Indeed, after practice yesterday, Fedotenko wasn't interested in even joking about the possibility of Round 2 with Armstrong.
«What happened, happened," he said. «We just need to play the game.»
Sports Network: Shero has displayed a knack for improving his club in the midst of a season, something that is one of the more difficult tasks an NHL general manager is expected to perform. This past offseason was a different story, as Shero signed veteran forwards Miroslav Satan and Ruslan Fedotenko to one-year deals. They were expected to do the jobs Kunitz and Guerin are currently excelling in, but Satan and Fedotenko have had disappointing seasons with the Penguins.
To be fair to other GMs, Shero does have the luxury of having Crosby and Malkin —- two of the best centers in the world —- as the pivots on his top two lines. That factor has indisputably helped incoming players like Kunitz and Guerin to make an easy adjustment upon joining the Penguins. If plugging players like Satan and Fedotenko doesn't work, simply add another winger to the mix, and eventually you'll find a combination that works.
In fact, the process could conceivably go on as long as Crosby and Malkin are part of the Penguins organization. Even though Satan and Fedotenko haven't reached expected levels of production, Shero was wise to sign both players to one-year deals. The strategy allows a GM flexibility from year-to-year, something that is extremely important in the salary cap era.
